dyer-county-sheriff-8

Authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Monday, September 1, 2025, in east Dyer County.

A vehicle was stolen from the city limits of Newbern and an officer safety statement was included in the BOLO due to multiple weapons being in the vehicle when it was stolen. At 10:04 p.m., a Newbern police officer observed a vehicle matching the description of the stolen vehicle. The officers attempted a traffic stop and the suspect failed to stop. The vehicle was subsequently disabled by spike strips, came to a stop, and the suspect produced a rifle. For reasons that are under investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, two deputies discharged their firearms at 10:34 p.m., and the driver was injured.

Emergency medical services were called and the suspect, a 44 year old male, was flown to a nearby trauma center for treatment.

No officers were injured.

Per department policy, an independent investigation is being conducted by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation at the request of 29th District Attorney General. Additional details may be released as they become available, however, this is an active investigation.
