Chief Jerry Hudgens of the Caruthersville Police Department is warning residents about a fraudulent text message currently circulating in the area. The message claims to be from the DMV/MoDOT and threatens recipients that it will:
- Suspend your vehicle registration on August 1
- Revoke your driving privileges for 30 days
- Charge a 35% toll booth service fee
- Report you to credit agencies
- File legal action.
It then urges you to “Pay Now” through a fake link. THIS IS A SCAM. Do NOT click the link, respond to the message, or send any payment. What you should do instead is report it to the Missouri Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division, contact CPD or your local law enforcement if you believe you’ve been scammed then delete the message.
