New Madrid County authorities are investigating a shooting that happened in Portageville late Sunday night. In a news release, Sheriff Joey Higgerson reports deputies were called to a residence on West 8th Street to assist the Portageville PD – the victim, whose name was not released, was shot by her husband who then turned the gun on himself.
New Madrid County Coroner George Deslisle pronounced 58 year old William James dead at the scene. The unnamed victim was taken by helicopter to a Memphis hospital.
The incident is still under investigation.
