New Policy Concerning Proof of Insurance in Kennett Effective January 1, 2026

The City of Kennett has adopted a new policy concerning proof of auto insurance, effective January 1, 2026

State statute requires that all vehicles operated on Missouri roads must maintain proof of insurance at all times. Proof of insurance must be provided to a Law Enforcement officer upon demand during a traffic stop or vehicles involved in an accident. The following policy deals with motorist who are unable to provide proof of insurance.

1. If a motorist is involved in a roadway accident, this requires an officer to impound a vehicle in the event it is determined that no proof of insurance is provided. In the event that an officer works a past tense accident, this still requires proof of insurance that was active at the time of the accident. If no proof of insurance is able to be provided, it requires that the vehicle or vehicles be impounded. In order for the vehicle to be released from impound, the responsible party must provide proof of insurance. They are also responsible for any fees owed to the tow company pertaining to the tow and storage of the vehicle.

2. In the event that a motorist is stopped for a traffic violation and the driver is unable to provide proof of insurance, this policy requires that the vehicle be impounded immediately. In order for a vehicle to be released from impound, the responsible party must provide proof of insurance. They are also responsible for any fees owed to the tow company pertaining to the tow and storage of the vehicle.
