A suspect has been arrested and charged with first degree murder in connection with the shooting death of a Portageville man, found lying in the roadway early Sunday. New Madrid County Sheriff Joey Higgerson reports 18 year old Trey Sutton is charged with first degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of David Chamberlain.

Higgerson reports officers learned the gun used in the shooting had been disposed of in a drainage ditch on CR 420 near a bridge. With the help of the New Madrid County Highway Department, investigators found the weapon in about one foot of water.

Sutton’s father, Jeremy Sutton, was charged with tampering with physical evidence.

In addition, four others have been jailed with charges pending for tampering with physical evidence and possession of a controlled substance. Their names were not released.
