Watch Out for Skimmers at the Gas Pump

The New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the use of skimming devices at local gas stations. Skimmers are devices that thieves attach over card slots at gas pumps. They can be used to save and store credit card information.

There are several things, according to the department, to do in order to avoid falling victim to skimmers. Among them is to note whether or not the serial-numbered security sticker on a pump is ripped; someone may have tampered with it. Also, walking inside to pay instead of paying at the pump may be a less than ideal but better thing to do.

Sheriff William Cooper says you should pay attention to your credit/debit card statement. If you see any issues, contact his department.
