OAKS Fundraiser a Huge Success

On Saturday, October 23, Kennett OAKS held their first Annual October Fall Fundraiser
to help subsidize their food budget. According to Laura Ford, OAKS Administrator, the
fundraiser was a success, raising over $7,200 through quilt tickets, donations, the bake
sale, and rummage sale.

The handmade quilt, donated and made by Bill Hook, was won by Anita Blackman from
Kennett. Hook, personally delivered the quilt to Blackman who was thrilled to hear her
ticket was drawn. “We want to thank Bill for donating the quilt to be part of our
fundraiser,” said Ford. “We believe it brought to the fundraiser close to $2,000.”
Ford also reported that between personal donations, the bake and rummage sale, over
$5,000 was raised. “We were so surprised and excited to see the final tally,” said Ford.
“We want to thank everyone who worked hard to make this event a success, from those
who brought in items to sell to those who baked so many goodies.”

Ford said that all the funds will go toward their raw food budget. “The cost of food has
continued to rise, and although we do receive funds from the Older American’s Act, it
does not cover all of it,” said Ford. “So, if we want to continue to offer our seniors a
great meal for donation of $3 a plate, we have to make up the difference.”

Ford said they thank everyone who participated in the event and hopes they will
continue to support Kennett OAKS Senior Nutrition Center. For those who are 60 years
and older, Ford invites them to come in and see what the Kennett City Senior Sales Tax
is doing for area seniors as the center seeks to serve older Americans by offering ways
to keep them healthy, physical, socially, mentally, and financially.
