2.3 quake shakes parts of SE Missouri

People in Sikeston, MO., or Tiptonville, TN., may have felt an earthquake that hit Tuesday afternoon a mile north of LaForge, MO., in New Madrid County.

The U.S. Geological Survey says a 2.3 magnitude quake hit right after 12:30 pm. This comes after a 2.9 magnitude earthquake around 8:oo am Tuesday morning.

That tremor was the second of the day in the Bootheel.

A 2.9 magnitude earthquake hit around 8 a.m. yesterday morning just east of Portageville and about eight miles north of New Madrid on the Missouri side of the Mississippi river.

Earthquakes with 2.5 magnitude or lower aren’t typically felt but are recorded on seismographs.

Every month there’s a handful of these small tremors and usually there’s no damage.
